Reward vs Lure vs Bribe
When picking a trainer to use there is always that number 1 question, ” What type of training do you use?”
You will get a mixed bag of answers but I am going to give you some information on the age old question, ” but I don’t want my dog to just come because I have food.”
When using treat or toy based rewards there are two ways most people or trainers use them as a lure or as a reward.
Here at Wilos Wish Dog Training we use them as a reward. The way we do that is through choice based training. The reward is NOT given to the dog until the task has been completed and completed to the criteria that has been set for the dog.
We build our layers of training for the desired behavior than we use intermittent re reinforcement, which means after the dog starts to learn the behavior they won’t always get a treat the first time, or the second time. They learn to keep doing the behavior because they know that they will get a reward at some time. The reason we train this way is that the dog does not depend on food to perform a behavior.
Now with lure based training it is that, you will lure the dog with most commonly used is a treat. With this style of training the dog starts to depend on that treat to be part of the behavior. It becomes a chained behavior. In order for the dog to come when called you must have the cookie, call the dog then reward.
So that means with this style training you must carry food with you all the time or your dog will not listen to you. How much of a pain is that!
That is why Wilos Wish Dog Training chooses to use choice based training, because we want your dog to listen and work because of the bond you created not the treat your have.
